I grew up between three worlds: my family’s deep ties to gospel music, the years I spent soaking up Afro highlife/juju music and the years I spent studying in Nigeria, Europe and Australia–respectively. I started my musical career in a particular choral group (in Ibadan) in 1993, becoming a lead vocalist in the choral group’s album in 1997 when I was in JSS3. Since then, I had performed in so many churches, concerts and other events in Nigeria–especially in Southwestern Nigeria. In 2000, I shifted away from pure gospel music and cleaved to Afro highlife and [tungba/groovy] gospel music, which I blended with juju and local Yoruba percussions. I therefore became a secular entertainer and blended my music with Afropop-highlife and locally-relevant hard-hitting or groovy Yoruba songs– entertaining people and discussing social issues, personal narratives and love in my music.
I decidedly took this direction, choosing to lean into a wider array of Afrobeat sounds and styles, in order to convey a wider array of emotions, social topics and personal lived experiences. I later decided to take a long break from singing and focused instead on my academic ambition. I left music for a long time because of my academic aspirations but music has never left me for a nanosecond. After a long break, I am back to Afrobeat and gospel world again.
