Thankful

Thankful from Nigerian artist, Gbenga Afolayan (aka Folly-G), is an album whose nine (9) tracks cover all kinds of experiences, universal feeling of Afropop highlife, gospel and electronic dance music. The three (3) gospel tracks (Ekwueme, thankful and don’t forget me) in the album are inspirational tracks with powerful flow which can elevate people to a level, where the jagged edges of life’s most persistent problems are somehow softened.

Also, the album is a modern and new path for the pan-African artist, as the album also flirts with ‘Electronic Dance Music’ (EDM). EDM beat is western-oriented but is making African people dance in the recent times. Of course, old grooves need to be maintained but most youths do not really like old grooves—they want new grooves. In this Album, Folly-G therefore attempts to strike a balance between EDM and Afrobeat in order to respond to the youth’s desires without altering his musical pattern in the following tracks (Thankful, Power to reign, Baby dance, Ko ma roll). The essence of this is to demonstrate the desire to talk to various generations. Folly-G’s album conveys strong political message (Track: The world I imagine) and deep emotions for our destiny (Track: My head) and unflinching love for our mother (Track: Mama) with beautifully mastered expressions.
